Concrete Build From the Ground Up
Concrete shrinks as it cures and moves with the ground underneath it. Every slab relieves that stress somewhere. The only question is whether the crack lands on a line someone planned or across the middle of your new patio.
Control joints, saw cut spacing, reinforcement and slab thickness are all decided before the truck arrives.
Underneath that, the subgrade gets compacted properly. A perfect pour over soft ground is a cracked slab on a delay.

Cracks Get Told Where to Go
Joint spacing is set from slab thickness, and saw cuts go in within the window after the pour, not whenever the crew comes back. Reinforcement holds the panels in line. Get that layout right and the cracks stay invisible.

The Ground Decides the Lifespan
Much of this county sits on expansive clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Subgrade gets cleared, graded and compacted; base goes in where the soil needs it, and slab thickness is set for what the surface will actually carry.

Finish, Color and Bare Feet
Finish is not only a look. A broom finish grips; wet, exposed aggregate hides wear; and a dark integral color holds heat you will feel barefoot in August. We match the finish to how the surface gets used.

What Concrete Work Costs
Concrete is usually the lower cost hard surface. Six things decide where in the range you land.
Area & Thickness
Square footage sets the baseline. Thickness steps up for anything carrying real load.
Finish
Broom finish is the baseline. Stamped, coloured and exposed aggregate each add labour and material.
Subgrade & Base
Grading, compaction and imported base where the soil will not hold on its own.
Demolition & Haul Away
Breaking out an existing slab, and the tonnage that leaves the site.
Reinforcement
Mesh, rebar schedule or fibre, set by what the slab carries and how it is jointed.

How much does a concrete patio cost in San Diego?
Concrete is generally the lower-cost option for a large hard surface. A standard broom finish patio sits at the bottom of the range; stamped and coloured work costs meaningfully more, and demolition of an existing slab adds cost before anything new is poured. Thickness and reinforcement also move the number, which is why our estimates state both.
Will my new concrete crack?
Every slab moves as it cures and as the ground shifts underneath it. Our job is to control where that shows: joint spacing set from slab thickness, saw cuts made in the right window after the pour, and reinforcement holding the panels in line. Hairline cracking at a joint is normal and expected. A crack wandering across a panel is a jointing or subgrade failure.
How long before I can use it?
Foot traffic is usually fine after a day or two, furniture after about a week, and vehicles later than most people expect. Concrete keeps gaining strength for roughly a month after the pour. We give you the actual dates for your slab, since weather and mix affect the timeline.
Stamped concrete or pavers?
Concrete costs less to install and gives you a continuous surface with no joint lines to maintain. Pavers cost more, flex with ground movement instead of cracking, and any damaged unit lifts out and gets replaced. Can you resurface my existing concrete instead of replacing it?
Often, yes, and it costs considerably less. If the slab is structurally sound and the problem is surface wear, staining or a dated finish, an overlay or resurfacing gives you a new surface on the existing base. If the slab is broken up, sinking or cracked through, resurfacing only hides the problem for a season, and replacement is the honest answer.
Do I need a permit to pour concrete?
Usually not for a patio, walkway or landing at grade. Permits generally do apply to structural slabs and foundations, work in the public right of way, and anything that changes how water drains across a property line. We confirm before starting and pull what is required.
