Landscaping San Diego
Step Outside Into Something That Lasts
Planting, soil, grading, and irrigation designed as one system, so the yard fills in and still looks right on a water budget.
ER-100 · Landscaping
A Landscape Is Built Before It Is Planted
Most yards in this county are planted into whatever the builder left behind. Compacted fill, a grade that runs toward the house, and sprinkler lines nowhere near the plants that need them.
The planting is the last thing that happens. Soil, grade, drainage, and the irrigation feeding it all go in first, and between them they decide what is still alive in August.
Built right, a yard thickens with each season and needs less water each year. Built wrong, it thins out, and you replace it.
ER-200 · What We Build
Every Layer of a Working Yard
Scope follows the soil, the slope, and how much water the yard is allowed.
01
Planting plans, layout, and grade drawn before anything is ordered or dug.
02
Decompaction, amendment, and grade correction, because planting into builder fill fails.
04
Trees, shrubs, borders, and ground cover, specified for the sun each bed gets.
05
Real lawn over prepared soil, or synthetic turf where water is the concern.
06
Drip, rotors, and weather-based controllers sized to the planting they feed.
07
The finish layer that holds moisture, slows weeds, and keeps beds in shape.
08
Ongoing care after install, so the yard we built stays the yard you bought.
ER-300 · How We Build
What Actually Makes a Landscape Fail
L-01 · Soil
Plants Fail in the Soil, Not the Sun
Most replacement plantings we get called about went into compacted builder fill with no amendment and nowhere for water to go. Roots never leave the root ball. We fix the ground before anything goes into it.
L-02 · Water
The Water Budget Comes First
San Diego prices water in tiers and tightens outdoor watering in dry years, so a planting list has to live within what the yard is actually allowed. We set the water budget first, then choose plants that fit inside it.
L-03 · Payoff
A Yard That Fills In Instead of Thinning Out
A landscape planted at the right density in corrected soil closes its gaps in two or three seasons and requires less water each year. One planted for instant effect peaks the day it is installed.

What Landscaping Costs
Landscaping is priced by area and by what has to happen under it. These are the six factors that move it.
Area & Access
Square footage sets the baseline. Whether machinery reaches the yard sets the labor.
Soil & Grading
Decompaction, imported soil, and regrading, which is the line most quotes leave out.
Planting Density & Size
Plant count, container size, and how finished you want the yard to look on day one.
Irrigation Scope
A new system, an extension, or a repair, plus valves, zones, and the controller.
Lawn & Ground Cover
Sod, seed, synthetic turf, mulch or gravel, priced by area and by depth.
Removal & Disposal
Tearing out old lawn, roots, concrete or dead planting, and hauling it off-site.
Every yard is priced based on a measured plan that lists the soil work, irrigation zones, and plant sizes. Maintenance is quoted as a separate agreement and is never folded into the install price.

Landscaping, Answered
How much does landscaping cost in San Diego?
Area sets the baseline, and what happens underneath moves it. A yard that needs decompaction, imported soil, regrading, and a new irrigation system costs many times as much as the same yard with sound ground. Plant size matters too, since a landscape planted to look finished on day one carries far more material than one planted to fill in. We price from a measured plan with the soil work and irrigation zones listed.
Do you do ongoing maintenance, or only installation?
Both. We install landscapes and maintain them afterward, which is the honest answer, because the first two years determine whether a planting plan works. Maintenance is quoted as a separate agreement rather than folded into the build, so you can take it or leave it without affecting the install price. If you already have a gardener, we will tell them what the yard needs and hand it over.
What can I actually plant with San Diego water restrictions?
More than most people expect, and less than a plant list from a wetter climate. Outdoor watering is the first thing restricted in a dry year, so the safe approach is to design for what the yard is allowed rather than what it could have in a good year. That still leaves a wide palette of Mediterranean and California natives, plus the ornamental material that has proven it can hold up here.
How long does a landscaping project take?
A straightforward planting refresh is usually a few days. A full yard with demolition, regrading, drainage, a new irrigation system, and planting generally runs two to four weeks on site. Soil and grading take longer than clients expect, while planting takes less time. If a retaining wall or hardscape is part of the same project, that work sets the schedule, and the planting goes in last.
Will my new planting survive the first summer?
That is what the establishment period is for. New planting needs more water than the mature landscape will, on a schedule that tapers off over the first year, and the controller is programmed for that rather than for the yard it will eventually be. Most losses we see in other people's work come from watering new plants on a mature schedule, or from soil that was never opened up.
