The Tile Is the Last Thing That Matters
A bathroom is the wettest room in the house and the only one where a small mistake stays hidden. Water finds a gap behind the tile, soaks the substrate and shows up two years later as a stain on a ceiling below.
Waterproofing, slope to the drain, the right backer board and a properly formed shower pan are what decide whether a bathroom lasts.
We build that layer correctly, then set tile on top of it. In that order, every time.

Everything Fails at the Waterproofing
Tile and grout are not waterproof. The membrane behind them is. Shower pans get formed with the correct slope to the drain, corners and changes of plane get detailed properly, and the substrate is board rated for wet areas rather than ordinary drywall.

A Small Bathroom Is a Puzzle
Most San Diego bathrooms are small, and gaining usable space is about millimetres and clearances rather than square footage. Some fixtures move cheaply and some do not, because a toilet drain is a very different job from a vanity. We map that first.

Plenty of housing stock here dates from the fifties and sixties, and opening a bathroom wall can reveal aged supply lines, cast iron drains or a soft subfloor. Homes of that era can also hold materials that need testing before demolition. We look before quoting.

How much does a bathroom remodel cost in San Diego?
Scope and complexity drive it more than square footage. A guest bath keeping its layout, with new tile, vanity and fixtures, sits at the bottom of the range. A full primary suite with a large tiled shower, glass, double vanity and relocated plumbing sits well above. Moving a drain and anything found behind the walls adds cost on top. We price from a measured plan with the waterproofing system specified.
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
Most bathrooms run two to four weeks on site, with design, selections and any permitting ahead of that. Tile and waterproofing need cure time between stages that cannot be compressed, and custom glass is usually measured after tiling and then takes time to arrive. That glass wait is why a bathroom can look finished and still not be usable.
What if it is our only bathroom?
We plan around it. In a single-bathroom home, we sequence the work so the room is out of service for the shortest possible stretch, order every fixture and the tile before demolition, and tell you plainly which days you will need another option. What we will not do is start a single bathroom job with materials still on order.
Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom?
Usually, if plumbing, electrical or ventilation changes. Replacing fixtures in the same positions is treated differently from relocating a drain, adding circuits or altering the exhaust. Requirements vary across county jurisdictions. We confirm what applies to your project, pull the permits and meet the inspectors.
Should I convert my tub to a shower?
It depends on the house rather than on taste. If it is your only bathroom, keeping one tub is usually the wiser call for resale, especially with families as buyers. If you have another tub elsewhere and this one goes unused, converting it to a walk-in shower almost always makes the bathroom more usable, and it is often possible inside the existing footprint.
How do I know the waterproofing was done properly?
You will not be able to see it once tile is on, which is exactly why it gets skipped. We tell you which membrane system we are using, and the wet areas are inspected and photographed before tile goes on so there is a record of what is behind the wall. Ask any contractor bidding your bathroom to name their waterproofing system. The answer tells you a lot.
Can you fix a shower that is already leaking?
Often, yes, and the first job is finding out how far the water has traveled. A leak at a valve or a failed grout line is a contained repair. Water that has been getting behind a pan or a membrane for years usually means the shower needs rebuilding, because the damage is in the substrate rather than on the surface. We will tell you which one you have.
