Sanctuary by Firelight: San Diego Garden Residence
A homeowner on Huron Ave called our team at Kan Builders for a fire pit installation and outdoor kitchen as part of a plan for backyard remodeling in San Diego. The family wanted one yard where they could cook, dine, relax, and host without disconnected zones. Their old setup lacked shade and gathering areas, making family time less comfortable. They also wanted durable finishes, better flow, and a garden area that still felt open. Our design-build team shaped the remodel around those goals and created connected spaces with a practical look.
Here’s how the new layout created a better balance between cooking, dining, relaxing, and garden space.
The Fire Lounge Sets the Mood
A circular fire pit anchors the raised patio and gives four lounge chairs a center. Warm-toned masonry works with the stamped concrete below it. The layout keeps the seating close enough for conversation while leaving room to move around the area.
Cable-style railing defines the patio edge without closing off the view. Curved steps connect the levels, and recessed step lights mark the change in height after dark.
The Outdoor Kitchen Makes Hosting Easier
The covered outdoor kitchen gives the family a place to cook and serve meals outside. Stone veneer wraps the base, while the counter includes a built-in stainless grill, sink, storage drawers, and an under-counter appliance.
A large patio cover shades the cooking and bar area. Bar-height seating faces the counter, which lets guests stay near the cooking area without crowding the workspace.

Garden Space Balances the Hardscape
Artificial turf creates a green dining zone with room for a full table and chairs. A raised planting bed runs along the privacy fence, where upright shrubs add greenery without taking up much yard space. A decorative fountain gives the garden another focal point.
The right choices of turf, planting, and hardscape keep the yard from feeling too paved and give the family more ways to use the space.
Fire, Food, and Garden Work Together
Stamped concrete connects the lounge, kitchen, steps, and garden edge with one consistent finish. Kan Builders treated each feature as part of the same layout instead of separate additions.
For homeowners considering fire pit installation in San Diego, CA, this project shows how placement can shape the whole yard. The fire area stays close to the kitchen for entertaining, while each zone still has enough room to serve its own purpose.
A Backyard Built for Everyday Use
The finished yard now supports cooking, dining, quiet afternoons, and evenings around the fire. This approach to backyard remodeling in San Diego improved the home’s outdoor appeal and added useful features that can support property value. The client was pleased with the comfort, function, and polished look of the finished space.
