Deck construction San Diego

Step Into Outdoor Living

New decks engineered for your slope, your span and the coast, then permitted and built by one licensed contractor.

ER-100 · Deck Construction

A Structure Before It Is a Surface

Homeowners shop for decks by the board. Colour, grain, composite or wood. That decision is the last five percent of a deck and the first thing most quotes talk about.

Everything that decides whether a deck is still solid in fifteen years sits underneath it. Footing depth, post sizing, joist span, hardware and flashing where the ledger meets the house.

We engineer the frame for your lot first, then choose the surface that suits the exposure and the budget.

ER-200 · What We Build

Every Deck We Build

Layouts, durable materials, and a finish made for everyday outdoor living.

Composite Decking

Capped composite that holds colour, resists rot and needs washing rather than refinishing.

Hardwood Decks

Ipe, cumaru and mahogany. Dense tropical hardwood for the longest lasting natural surface.

Redwood & Cedar

The classic Southern California deck. Warm, workable and refinished every few years.

Elevated & Hillside Decks

Post and beam structures that turn an unusable slope into level outdoor floor.

Multi Level Decks

Stepped platforms that follow the grade, separating dining and lounging levels naturally.

Railings, Stairs & Lighting

Cable, glass, metal and wood railings, code height stairs and integrated riser lighting.

Deck Repair & Restoration

Existing deck that is sound but tired? Board replacement and refinishing live here.

All Exterior Services

Patios, hardscape, pergolas and the rest of the yard around the new deck.

What Makes a Deck Last Here

01 / Structure

The Frame Is the Deck

Footings sized to the soil, posts and beams sized to the load, joists spaced to the decking that goes on top. Concealed fasteners and proper flashing at the house wall, because that connection is where most deck failures start.

Coastal Sun, Salt and Marine Layer

A deck in Encinitas and a deck in Escondido are not the same build. Salt air corrodes standard hardware, and the marine layer keeps wood damp, while inland heat and dry seasons move boards. Material and fasteners are specified accordingly.

Building on a San Diego Hillside

Half the lots in this county fall away from the house. An elevated deck is often the cheapest way to gain level outdoor space on a slope, and it is the version that needs real structural design.

From Separate Zones to One Connected Yard.

Every KAN Builders project is tracked as a full record: location, categorization, scope, material sheets, delivery timeline, and the technical challenges we solved along the way. Below is one complete progression: a full backyard remodel in Ocean Beach that turned three disconnected zones into a single outdoor living space anchored by a built-in spa, custom bar, and shade pergola.

Technical Challenges & Solutions

Sheet S-01
  1. Challenge

Yard read as three disconnected zones (spa, seating, and passage) with uneven grade transitions and no clear circulation from the sliding door out to the water.

    Solution

Built a single framed deck platform tied to the sliding-door threshold, with engineered step transitions dropping to the spa surround so the route from house to seating to bar to water reads as one continuous surface.

  2. Challenge

Built-in hot tub needed to sit flush with the deck and read as fully integrated, but still allow full access to the pump, heater, and plumbing for routine service.

    Solution

Designed removable panels into the surround so the finished skirt lifts off cleanly for equipment access without disturbing the composite deck boards, trim, or step transitions.

  3. Challenge

Black metal pergola posts had to carry lateral wind load over the dining and bar zone without telegraphing hardware or hollow spots through the finished composite deck surface.

    Solution

Coordinated post locations with the framing plan so each post lands on a dedicated concrete pier below the deck, with concealed base plates and reinforced blocking added to the substructure during framing.

ER-600 · Costing Matters

What a New Deck Costs

Two decks of the same square footage can price very differently. These are the six reasons why.

Size & Height

Square footage sets the surface cost. Height above grade sets the structural cost underneath it.

Decking Material

Redwood, composite and tropical hardwood sit at three different price points and three different maintenance loads.

Framing & Footings

Post spacing, beam sizing and footing depth, driven by soil, span and how high the deck sits.

Site Access & Slope

Whether concrete and lumber can reach the build area, or have to be carried down a hillside.

Railings & Stairs

Cable and glass railings cost multiples of wood. Stair runs add framing, footings and code detail.

Permits & Engineering

Plan check, permit fees and, above a set height or span, stamped structural calculations.

Every deck is priced from a measured plan with the framing spelled out, not from a square foot average. You see the structure, the surface and the permit costs as separate lines.

ER-800 · COMMON QUESTIONS

Deck Building, Answered

How much does it cost to build a deck in San Diego?

Material and height drive the number more than anything. A ground level redwood deck is the least expensive build. A composite deck sits higher per square foot but costs less to own. An elevated hillside deck with stairs and cable railing is the most expensive per square foot, because most of the work is under your feet rather than on top. We quote from a measured plan with the framing itemized.

How long does it take to build a deck?

Most residential decks take one to three weeks on site once permits are in hand. Plan check and permitting add time ahead of that, and an elevated or engineered deck adds more because footings have to be inspected before framing goes on. Concrete cure time on footings is fixed and cannot be compressed.

Do I need a permit to build a deck?

Usually, yes. Decks attached to the house, raised above a set height, over a certain area or carrying a roof generally need a permit and inspections. Very low, small, freestanding decks are often exempt. Thresholds sit in the residential code and are applied by your local building department, and coastal zones add another layer. We confirm what your deck needs and pull the permits for it.

Wood or composite: which is better in San Diego?

It depends on how you want to spend your time and money. Redwood costs less up front and needs cleaning and refinishing every few years. Capped composite costs more to install, holds its colour and only needs washing. In coastal exposure composite generally wins on maintenance, while inland heat can make dark composite boards uncomfortable underfoot.

Can you repair or replace my existing deck?

Repair and refinishing work is covered on our deck repair page. If the framing is sound, repair is almost always the better value. If posts, joists or the ledger connection are compromised, a rebuild is the honest answer and we will tell you which one you are looking at after seeing it.

How long does a new deck last?

A properly framed deck lasts decades, and the surface is what wears out first. Redwood boards typically give ten to twenty years with upkeep, composite decking carries manufacturer warranties well beyond that, and tropical hardwood outlasts both. Framing, hardware and flashing decide the real lifespan.
